Radio man backs Stromberg Carlson

Thursday, 5 May 2011

Top rating Sydney radio commentator Ray Hadley is a racing fan from way back and he backed another winner with Break The Ice at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.

Break The Ice is a son of Raheen Stud sire Stromberg Carlson and cost the shock-jock $24,000 at the 2008 Gold Coast Magic Millions Summer yearling sale.  He’s already earned over $87,000 and there’s more in store on wet tracks during the winter months.

Break The Ice is trained by Peter Balzen and appreciated the step-up to 1800m in the Coca-Cola Amatil Plate (1800m).  He had put the writing on the wall with an unlucky second to Shamardashing over 1650m at Doomben on April 20.

Jockey Scott Seamer switched off in the early stages and then stoked up approaching the home turn.  He caught the others by surprise and the race was as good as won at the furlong.

Break The Ice (4g Stromberg Carlson – Almasiga by Timber Country) is raced by Hadley and his neighbour Dave McSeveny.  He is the only winner to date for Sydney winning mare related to recent G1 Hong Kong Champions Mile winner Xtension.

Stromberg Carlson is a son of champion sire Redoute’s Choice and his oldest are four year-olds.  He has sired the winners of 78 races to date.

Break The Ice stretched his winning range to 2200 metres when he won the $100,000 Starcraft Hcp at the Gold Coast last year.
